What is SEO in digital marketing?

What is SEO in digital marketing?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In digital marketing, it means improving a website so search engines can understand its pages and people can find useful answers through unpaid, or organic, search results. Google is a search engine; Firefox is a browser used to visit websites.

For a business owner, the purpose is practical: help the right visitor understand your offer and take a relevant next step, such as requesting a quote. More traffic alone is not the same as more customers.

How is SEO different from paid advertising?

Organic results and paid ads are different channels. SEO involves work on content, website structure and discoverability. Google Ads buys advertising placements. Paying for ads does not improve your organic Google ranking, and no agency can guarantee the first position.

A useful planning question is: do you need immediate campaign visibility, a stronger long-term website, or both? Your budget should reflect your goal and the resources needed to maintain each channel.

The main areas of SEO

On-page SEO: make each page useful and clear

Give each page a clear topic, descriptive title and readable headings. Answer the visitor’s main question, explain unfamiliar terms and connect related pages with useful internal links. Write naturally rather than repeating a keyword to meet a density target.

Technical SEO: make the website accessible

Check that important pages can be crawled and indexed, links work and mobile visitors can use the site. A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs but does not guarantee indexing. Duplicate URLs, broken navigation and accidentally blocked pages deserve attention before publishing more articles.

If your website needs structural changes, coordinate SEO work with website development so visitors can navigate from an answer to the relevant service and contact information.

Content and reputation: give people a reason to trust you

Explain what you actually do, add original examples and keep information accurate. Where appropriate, show who wrote or reviewed the content. A convincing service page should address the customer’s questions, rather than make unsupported claims about being the best.

A simple example for a Delhi business

Imagine a Delhi bakery that makes custom birthday cakes. This is a hypothetical example, not an NB Digital PR client case study. Its owner could create a page explaining cake sizes, ordering deadlines, delivery areas and how to request a quote. A separate article could answer common questions about planning an order.

The article should link to the ordering page where it helps the reader. The owner could then record whether visitors request quotes and whether those enquiries fit the bakery’s delivery area. This turns a broad ambition to “get traffic” into a specific business goal.

How to measure SEO performance

Google Search Console reports impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position. Impressions show search visibility; clicks show visits from results. CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is an aggregate metric, not a promise that every person sees the same ranking.

Compare the same page and similar time periods, and check queries and devices before drawing conclusions. Separately track enquiries, bookings or purchases in your business reporting. A jump in impressions with no relevant enquiries may call for a better page offer, rather than more articles.

A beginner’s SEO checklist

  1. Choose one page and define the visitor’s question and the action you want to help them take.
  2. Check the page on a phone: can you read it, follow the links and contact the business?
  3. Replace vague promises with clear service details, useful examples and answers to real customer questions.
  4. Check the page’s indexing status and record a Search Console baseline.
  5. Log your changes, then review the page’s search visibility and relevant enquiries over comparable periods.

Common questions about SEO

Is SEO free?

You do not pay Google for inclusion in organic results. Research, writing, development and ongoing review still require time or professional resources.

How long does SEO take?

There is no fixed deadline for every website. Competition, the site’s starting condition and the changes required affect the work. Ask for a clear plan and progress reporting rather than a guaranteed ranking date.

Can AI help with SEO content?

AI can help organise a draft, but a person should check facts, sources and relevance. Publish content that answers the reader’s needs and includes useful original input, rather than mass-producing similar pages.
